New Delhi

We flew back to Delhi on Sunday and had a quiet day around the house and pool yesterday. This morning we went into New Delhi in a tuk tuk. After the chaos of Jodhpur and Udaipur the traffic on the streets of New Delhi now seems almost quiet. Although people taking photos of it can get stared at:

Our journey took us past the many foreign embassies near here and then past the Prime Minister's house which was surrounded by armed soldiers. Then we went past India Gate, the national monument of India, an Arc de Triomphe like structure. The roads to it are blocked off to vehicles for security reasons.

On our way to some markets we snapped a photo of a typical Indian man with orange hair. Apparently, for hundreds of years the men here have used the orange dye from the henna plant to colour their greying hair. Everywhere you go you see middle-aged and old men with bright orange hair and beards!

Then we went to a few markets including Dilli Hart which is a permanent market where the stall holders are rotated every couple of weeks. You pay a small fee to go in (20 rupees, about 45 cents) so there are no beggars or pickpockets and the stall holders are far less pushy than at the usual markets.

Another hot day here so after the shopping it was home for a cool drink, lunch and later a swim. We leave tomorrow for the U.K.
